Yoga Nidra - Guided Meditation
Meditation is highly recommended for soothing one's soul after experiencing trauma and unsettling life's events.Yoga Nidra is a type of meditation where meditators are led through the steps of relaxtion, imagery, breathing and body awareness to achieve a deep state of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. Like other forms of meditation, such as Transcendental Meditation, Yoga Nidra practice has been to reduce tension and anxiety. People with with symptoms such as high anxiety, high blood pressure, headache and other stress releated conditions may respond very well to regular Yoga Nidra practice. Yoga Nidra is used in VA hospitals across the country to help soldiers cope with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain.
Yoga Nidra does not require physical strength or flexibility - the practitioner lies down in Shavasana (corps pose) and deeply and completely relaxes as a certified meditation leader guides meditators through steps in body sensitivity, breath and energy awareness, gentle breathing exercises and imagery. These steps are designed to develop positive feelings while neutralizing negative body sensations and stress, negative feelings and emotions and to improve beliefs and images.
In addition to reducing physical manifestations of the effects of stress (e.g., headaches, high BP), regular practice of Yoga Nidra can bring about experiences of joy and well-being, enhance the practitioner's ability to experience peace amid changing circumstances and the freedom from a personal sense of separation from others.
